Constitutional Amendment On Abortion Question Emerges From Committee

Legislation calling for a new section of the Kentucky constitution to state it doesn’t secure or protect a right to abortion or funding of abortion passed out of a House committee Thursday.

Afterwards, Margie Montgomery with Kentucky Right to Life said, “It’s what we’ve been waiting for, for such a long, long time, is to overturn Roe V Wade.” “Abortion was illegal, abortion was prohibited until Roe V Wade and Doe versus Bolton were passed.  So, this is a time to bring protection again to pre-born babies and their mothers,” said Montgomery.

The vote came after ten minutes of testimony with comments from opponents cut short just before noon.  In expressing opposition, Jackie McGranhan said the members of the general assembly and the House, specifically, should not be able to force anyone to stay pregnant against their will.

Kristie Miller spoke about living with an abusive man for years.  She said she had secret abortions, adding she couldn’t imagine having to have a child by her abuser.  “I also could not imagine the same government that could not protect me from my abuser, forcing me against my will to have my abuser’s child,” explained Miller.

If approved by the legislature, the question would then go before Kentucky voters.
