Lexington Mayor Jim Gray is offering his endorsement to former Vice Mayor Linda Gorton in her attempt to become the city’s next mayor.

The two term mayor’s official showing of support came before a small but vocal group at city hall. “And I have seen her commitment to not only her work, but to our city and that is a deep commitment.  And that’s why this endorsement, this decision on my part to support Linda was, not an easy one, but the right one,” said Gray.

Gray said he had conversations with Gorton and former police chief Ronnie Bastin, the other mayoral candidate.

In expressing appreciation for the backing, Gorton said she and Gray share a great love for Lexington.   "He has worked really hard in this community.  We’ve had innovation, we’ve had lots of infrastructure improvements which were needed.  And, his endorsement to me is just a terrific honor because I understand how dedicated he’s been to our city,” noted Gorton.

Bastin on Friday released a list of 18 people or organizations he says have either endorsed or recommended him for mayor.  That list included two former mayors and a former Kentucky governor.
