A new poll on Kentucky’s 6th District congressional race affirms what political pundits have been saying for months. It’s going to be a nail-biter.
Republican Incumbent Andy Barr is leading his Democratic challenger Amy McGrath by one point. The independent poll was conducted last week by the New York Times and Siena College. Among the 506 respondents, 47 percent favored Barr, 46 percent endorsed McGrath, and seven percent were undecided.
The Herald-Leader reports that McGrath has been heavily outspent on television by Barr and Republicans for most of the summer.
In the ads, Barr has painted McGrath as too liberal for the district and a rubber stamp for the Democrats’ agenda. McGrath has fired back by criticizing the GOP congressman’s voting record that’s mostly been along party lines. The poll’s margin of error is plus or minus four-point-nine percentage points, meaning the race is a toss-up in the central Kentucky district that President Trump carried by more than 15 points in 2016.
