Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell met with Madison County leaders Wednesday, speaking about his future priorities at EKU’s Center for the Arts.
McConnell told those present he would focus on bolstering defense and tougher international policies after his tenure as Senate Republican Leader ends.
He called for “peace through strength” against political rivals like Russia, China, Iran and North Korea, and furthering trade with allies in Asia.
“There’s no way our adversaries won’t continue to come at us one way or the other,” McConnell said. “But if you’re well prepared, they’re afraid to.”
McConnell also criticized the Biden administration for higher inflation and his policies at the southern border. He said those policies could handicap Vice President Kamala Harris’ current presidential campaign.
“I think what the Democratic nominee is going to do is argue that she’s the future, and that the Republican nominee is the past,” McConnell said. “The problem with that argument, it seems to me, is the Democratic nominee is stuck with the record of this administration. There’s no way to differentiate yourself from this particular administration.”
He also predicted the upcoming presidential election would be a close call, and that next week’s ABC News debate would help convince undecided voters.
