The remembrances continue to come following the passing of legendary Lexington golfer Anne Combs. That includes thoughts from those playing at one of her golfing stomping grounds.
The 79-year-old Lexington native passed away last week. Her funeral was on Tuesday. Anne Combs won more than 225 amateur tournaments over the years. That includes five Women’s Kentucky Am titles. One of her favorite courses to play was Lexington Country Club. Current Golf Pro Greg Griffith has this remembrance.
“We’ll she was certainly a wonderful lady, a wonderful athlete. An exceptional player. She worked at the game for her entire life. She was always out practicing and trying to get better. She was an inspiration certainly to younger golfers,” said Griffith.
With all that success, friends said it was her demeanor on and off the course that carried a lot of weight. Following her round Tuesday, golfer Barbara Hanna, who played with Combs, had this reflection.
“She would be the type of gal that would…she was very unobtrusive and she won the club champion many many times. So, she stopped playing in the club championship because she wanted to give a chance for others to win. That’s the kind of lady she was,” said Hanna.
Hanna added Combs was, quote, “under the radar…all the time…about things…even though she had a fabulous game.”
