Lexington’s Division of Water Quality is accepting applications for the city’s annual Stormwater Quality Incentive Grant Program. Jennifer Myatt is an environmental initiative specialist with the city. She said the program is designed to reduce the amount of rainwater run-off from impervious surfaces like roofs, driveways, roads, sidewalks and parking lots.
“Many of the stormwater issues we have are due to either the amount of the water or the water picking up pollutants on its way into the storm drain system, and then, of course, those pollutants end up in our creeks and streams and eventually to the Kentucky River.”
Myatt said the program is funded by the city’s water quality management fee, which began in 2010. Applications from businesses, nonprofits, schools and other organizations will be accepted through July 26.
“Basically, we're looking for projects that either reduce the amount of storm water runoff from a property or that help improve water quality as it leaves the property.”
Potential applicants are encouraged to attend either of two virtual Q&A sessions about the grant program. Lexington Environmental Quality and Public Works is a sponsor of WEKU.
