Lexington airport adds more direct flights to Florida

Stu Johnson

A new direct flight option to Florida from Kentucky is being offered at Blue Grass Airport. Avelo Airlines will fly direct flights to Fort Myers. Air travel has been complicated in recent years due to the pandemic, inflation, and a pilot shortage. Courtney Goff is the Avelo Communications Manager. She said this new service is possible through higher pay and benefits for pilots and flight crews. Goff also noted Avelo doesn’t have point-to-point layovers.

“So our pilots and flight attendants can actually…for example with this Fort Myers flight, they’ll live in the area so they’ll be able to do their routes for the day and come back and see the kids play a sports game or sleep in their own beds every night,” said Goff.

One-way flights to Fort Myers will occur on Mondays and Fridays starting November 18th. Avelo already has flights to Tampa and Orlando out of Blue Grass. Goff said the airline, which started flying in the spring of 2021, is looking at the possibility of a west coast flight out of Lexington.

Blue Grass Airport CEO Eric Frankl said these announcements are surprising, given the airline industry climate.

“We were just so blessed six weeks ago to be able to announce any airline at all, particularly any route, but announcing a new airline and two new routes back then and then adding a third route in this current environment has just been amazing. And I’m sure we’re not the norm, at least in our industry,” said Frankl.

In a time of high inflation, Courtney Goff said people may pass on certain purchases, but not give up their trips.
