Lexington surpasses 500 COVID-related deaths

Stu Johnson

The Lexington community’s loss due to coronavirus now extends beyond 500 deaths. The Fayette County Health Department reported four deaths Friday, bringing the total number of virus-related losses to 502. Kevin Hall is a spokesman for the Health Department. He said vaccinations remain the most important tool to keep those infected out of the hospital.

“This is a very sad reminder that this pandemic is not over. The community…we must continue to do everything we can to protect ourselves, our families, and everyone, particularly those around us who are at the highest risk,” said Hall

Over the last two weeks, Hall said the per-day COVID count has gone from around 700 up to 1000. The Lexington health department representative noted those numbers are still shy of the actual count because there remains a backlog to tally during this surge. He added it’s important to know your COVID status.

“With the at-home tests that are coming from the federal government, and they’re starting to arrive to people today, this is an important step in knowing your status to know if you can go out someplace if you need to continue to stay home. And, right now, getting tested, knowing if you are at risk of exposing others to this is so important,” explained Hall.

Hall recommends wearing a KN95 mask anytime out in public. He said the tight fit on the face is an important preventive measure. Hall noted a cloth mask is still better than no mask at all.
