Tuesday will mark the completion of 16 years of public service for Lexington Vice Mayor Linda Gorton. The registered nurse first served as 4th district council representative before earning an
at-large spot.
Gorton announced her intention not to seek re-election more than a year ago. For a few months after, she wondered if she made the right decision. Now, Gorton says she knows it was the right choice. "You know, our kids don't live close. I really want time to be with family. When we travel, I always look at my council calendar and see whether I can go or not," said Gorton.
Still, the veteran council member expects to keep tabs on city hall activity. "Oh, I think so. I might do that right away because I care about the things we've done over the last 16 years and I care about Lexington. I care very deeply about Lexington. It's a wonderful city," added Gorton.
Incoming Vice Mayor Steve Kay says there's no question Gorton has been a steadying force on the 15 member council. "She's not very fond of drama. She likes to be pretty straight forward so she's helped keep the council on what I consider a very even keel," said Kay.
Kay says he and Gorton have met to discuss the transition and he will likely reach out to her from time to time.
