The downtown Lexington streetscape project continues to rebuild some of the city's busiest sidewalks, and construction is now at the front door of local government. An excavator cleared out the old brick sidewalk along East Main Street Wednesday, right in front of the Lexington Fayette County Government Center.
"It is torn up; we've tried to keep a gravel walkway all the way down through there. We've been working with the businesses. We know the show schedule for the Kentucky Theatre; try to make sure they always have access there," says construction supervisor George Milligan.
Home entertainment retailer Barney Miller's is also on this south side of the street and dealing with the streetscape project, but fortunately the business can use its rear entrance for big deliveries.
Milligan says sewer work has caused delays. The sidewalk in front of the government center won't be ready for another couple of weeks.
