Lexington Considers Adding a Sister City to Its Family

Lexingtonsistercities.blogspot.com

Lexington is considering a sister city relationship with a city in Spain.

If a partnership with the Spanish city of Jerez is finalized, it would be the first in 14 years.

Members of the Sister cities board made a trip to Spain earlier this month.  Board Chair and council member Bill Farmer says Jerez, like Kentucky has strong horse, liquor, and aerospace industries.

“These are active partnerships that make a difference in economic development, make a difference in folks understanding different parts of the world and how it’s different from here to there,” said Farmer.

Sister Cities Director Kay Sargent says an effort to partner with a Spanish-speaking country began a number of years ago.

She says thought is being given to inviting a delegation from Jerez to Lexington this fall.  The last sister city relationship was established in 2003 linking Lexington with New Market England.
