Fayette County Reports Spike In COVID-19 Cases

Officials with the Fayette County Health Department report COVID-19 continues to spread in the Lexington area.  56 new cases were confirmed in Fayette County over the weekend.

A little over a month ago, it was not unusual for Fayette County to report single digit coronavirus cases day after day.  Starting in May, an outbreak at the Federal Medical Center in Lexington caused a sizeable uptick in cases.  But, Fayette County Health Department Spokesman Kevin Hall said the weekend increase is not attributed to activity at the federal prison. “People need to understand that this is not over.  They need to act like this is just now arriving in Kentucky and go back to that response that we had when COVID-19 first started,” said Hall.

Hall noted recent downtown protests have not contributed to the rise in cases.  But he admits an increase in the number of confirmed cases could come in a week or two.

Health Department officials also report the most recent wave of cases includes an increase in affected residents who self-identify as Hispanic.  The guidelines to help prevent the further spread of the disease are stay home when sick, stay six feet apart outside the family, no gathering in groups larger than ten, wear masks, and wash hands for at least 20 seconds.?
