Fayette Health Commissioner Doesn't See Trend In Recent Coronavirus Testing Results

The Lexington community has seen a flattening of the coronavirus curve over the past week or so.  Daily new cases have been in the single digits.

But, Fayette County Health Commissioner Kraig Humbaugh says it’s too soon to view this as a sustained trend.

“A week or so of data is difficult.  It’s certainly promising and we like this.  On the other hand, we don’t know how this virus is going to behave.  It’s a new virus.  We could be seeing peaks and valleys in terms of the numbers of cases that we have,”

As it relates to transmission of coronavirus, Humbaugh said it’s been difficult to control because  people with mild symptoms can spread the virus.  “We don’t know why some people have more severe illness than others.  The majority of people have this mild illness but then we have this 20% or less that need hospitalization,” explained Humbaugh.

Humbaugh noted increasing COVID-19 testing across the state could play a key role in deciding when to ease any restrictions.  The former state epidemiologist added ramping up testing would better define the true prevalence of the disease.
