County and city officials across the state are being urged to take part in a friendly competition designed to help reduce food insecurity among some Kentucky's families.
The Commonwealth of Kentucky Bowl was formally announced Monday in Lexington.
Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes participated in the event at Lexington’s God’s Pantry food bank.
“The challenge is to raise over 400,000 pounds or $50,000 in honor of the 50th of the legislation that created our area development districts,” said Lundergan-Grimes.
Officials in Kentucky’s area development districts are participating in the Commonwealth of Kentucky Bowl. Kentucky Association of Food Banks Director Tamara Sandberg believes the 400,000 pound goal can be achieved.
“Last year’s legal food frenzy was a competition between the attorney general’s office and the young lawyer’s division and they raised more than that, so we’re very confident that it’s doable and we’re looking forward to seeing the results,” noted Sandberg.
Food bank officials say nearly one-in-six Kentuckians and almost one-in-five children face food insecurity.
