Transformative Learning theory aims to change perspectives at EKU

An educational theory that emerged in the 1970s is being used today on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University. Transformative Learning helps people gain a new perspective by employing critical self-reflection and discussion.

Dr. Nicola Mason is the Chair of the Department of Teaching, Learning and Educational Leadership at EKU. In an interview on Eastern Standard, Mason pointed to students in her Exploring Africa Through Play class.

“While we're doing this reflection, students usually gravitate to a much deeper critical thinking that explores their own personal misconceptions of Africa. And we address a lot of those stereotypes. But more importantly, we address the questions of why underlining influences that have led us to those stereotypes,” said Mason.

Mason explained that discourse leads students to a new frame of reference, transforming their prior conceptions.

In another class, Mason said a critical exploration of privilege allows her students to transform their thinking around the experience of others.

“What we want students to do is reflect on what they intend to do with their privilege. Once they recognize their habits, recognizing various privileges allows us to view the world in a different way. And we stop making assumptions about others,” said Mason.

Mason said self-reflection on thinking habits helps her students become better educators. She added that the theory can be used in all classrooms and in daily life.

You can hear more about how to take advantage of Transformative Learning outside of the classroom setting during Eastern Standard.
