U.S. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin used a roundtable meeting in Lexington Wednesday to discuss a school choice proposal offered up by the Trump administration.
It comes in the form of a $5 billion dollar national tax credit scholarship program.
If enacted by Congress, the education secretary says Kentucky officials would decide how to structure their program including whether legislation is required. DeVos says citizens could designate up to 10% of their tax burden annually to a non-profit school choice group. She was asked about critics who say it could work to pull students and funds away from public schools.

DeVos says it meets the needs of kids who don’t fit in where they’ve been assigned. “In every state where students have more choices and more opportunities, the actual results in the traditional public schools get better right along with the students who’ve gone to a school of their choice.”
A statement from five Democratic lawmakers from Fayette County expressed concern about not being invited to the roundtable discussion. Bevin says the school choice matter shouldn’t be political.
