In the latest COIND-19 update, Lexington Coronavirus Vaccination Task Force Co-Chair Chuck Mix said three-quarters of the bluegrass community’s population 65-and-over have been vaccinated.
On Friday Mix said 38% of the total population has gotten shots. Mix said there could be less emphasis on T.V. and radio vaccination promotion and more on social media platforms to reach a younger group. “We’re working the Fayette County Public Schools to see if we can offer vaccinations to students who meet the age requirements for the vaccine which right now is 16 plus. We’re working with the school system to see if we can do something here pretty quickly before they’re off campus for the summer,” said Mix.
The Fayette County Health Department is working on new strategies to take coronavirus vaccinations into Lexington communities. Jessica Cobb with the Health Department said alternative times, days, and locations are being considered to reach vulnerable citizens.
Cobb noted public health officials are seeing a small number of vaccinated people still testing positive for the virus. “For the most part the people have not been symptomatic, but they’ve been tested for some other reason like having pre-procedure testing or something that would cause them to get tested, that they know that they’re positive,” said Cobb.
Cobb said the vaccines have been highly efficient in keeping people out of the hospital and, in many cases, from even displaying symptoms. She added she’s not aware of any significant vaccination-related complications like the rare blood clots found in a few women who got the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
