Fayette County Health Inspectors Dealing With Business And Consumer Covid Complaints

Fayette County is one of 68 counties in the Commonwealth with a red coronavirus designation.  Health department inspectors have already been busy responding to calls about COVID-19 guideline adherence.

Fayette County Environmental Health Supervisor Luke Mathias says most calls pertain to restaurants, groceries, and food outlets.  He said complaints about factories or other work places are typically forwarded to the State Labor Department.  Mathias noted the majority of calls involve mask use and social distancing.  But, the environmental health official added very few fines have been leveled.

“Typically if we warn them, educate the management team, usually whenever we go back to follow up, the issue is no longer there,” said Mathias.

Mathias said most calls involve concerns about patrons and not store employees. He added there have not been significant problems with uncooperative patrons.   “I can’t think of any significant interactions, negative interactions that we’ve had with patrons.  Maybe when the mandate was first enacted, but I think it’s really, I guess, people are beginning to accept the requirements,” said Mathias.

Mathias said his staff has been busy but not overwhelmed.
