Officials are finalizing details for a 30 year master plan for the Breaks Interstate Park. The 4,800 acre park, dubbed 'the Grand Canyon of the South,' is situated on the Kentucky-Virginia border.
Park Superintendent Austin Bradley says over the years, the Bluegrass side of the Breaks has seen little development. He says the new master plan calls for major improvements on the Kentucky side. "We're looking at everything from primitive camping opportunities in Potters Flat to equestrian and riverside like Kayak canoeing campsites," said Bradley.
Bradley says consideration is being given to allow rock climbing for the first time in the Breaks Park. "To identify those areas that would be suitable and investigate some of the environmental impacts and the safety implications and all that, but ultimately we expect that certain areas of the park will be open to climbing," added Bradley.
Bradley says additional public and private dollars will be sought to support the master plan project. "We're definitely gonna have to look outside the box and ask for assistance from the state governments on certain projects as well as seeking private sources of funding," explained Bradley
The park commission will hold a final vote in March on the master plan.?
