House Cats Purrs Her Way Into The Record Book

RENEE MONTAGNE, host:

Good morning. I'm Renee Montagne.

A housecat in Pitsford, England has purred her way into the record books. Smokey is being honored by Guinness as the world's loudest domestic cat. The 12-year-old feline's purr reached more than 67 decibels. That's nearly as loud as a vacuum cleaner. Proud owner Ruth Adams posted this clip of Smokey's purr on YouTube.

(Soundbite of purring)

MONTAGNE: And that would be the world's loudest purr.

It's MORNING EDITION. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
